Starting March 2024, the College Board will use the digital SAT. It will be online and incorporate a two-stage hybrid adaptive test format. This means that the score on the first module (mod) of the Math component containing 20 questions will dictate whether the second module the student gets is easy or hard. The questions themselves will not be adaptive but they will be weighted. According to one of the major test provider – McElroy tutoring, the modules themselves will be weighted with mod1 weighed more than mod2 (perhaps as much as 40% ).

The 2024 digital version dramatically affects students who are either: (1) not prepared for the most difficult questions or (2) tend to be careless – more in misreading then calculation. If the student makes it to the hard mod2, they may likely score between 700 – 800. Alternatively, the easy mod2 may limit them to the 500 – 600 range. This is all due to the weighting algorithms.

In essence,  if you don't move to mod 2 hard your grade could result in a 200 points difference. This is a direct result of the combination of question weights and frequency of hard questions in mod 2 between hard and easy.

THE TAKAWAY IS THAT YOUR STUDENT NEEDS TO FOCUS ON DIFFICULT PROBLEMS AND ELIMINATE CARELESSNESS.
